“How much will it cost?” is the first question almost everyone asks, and it is a fair one. Prices for computer repair in London vary a lot, and many shops are vague until they have your machine on the bench. We prefer to be open about it. Here is how repair is usually priced, what pushes a bill up or down, and exactly what we charge across London, with NW London our closest area.
The three ways repairs are priced
- Hourly rate. You pay for the time spent. This suits jobs where the fault is not known until someone looks, such as a laptop that is slow or keeps crashing.
- Fixed price. A set fee for a defined job, such as setting up a printer, cleaning a virus off a PC or moving to a new computer. You know the labour cost before work starts.
- Parts on top. A new battery, drive, screen or memory is a separate cost, whichever way the labour is charged.
What makes a repair cost more or less
- The fault itself. Software problems, a clean-up or a settings fix usually take far less time than a hardware swap.
- The parts. A common battery or a standard drive is one thing. A rare screen panel or a part for an older model can cost much more and take longer to arrive.
- The machine. Thin laptops with glued or soldered parts take longer to work on than a desktop with a removable side panel. Apple machines can be harder still.
- Your data. If files need saving first, that adds time. Our guide on getting files back from a dead laptop or hard drive covers it.
- Where the work happens. Some businesses charge for collecting and returning a machine, or for a bench fee. We come to you, so there is no trip across town with a heavy computer.

Parts, and what we do not charge
Parts are always quoted separately and ordered only with your approval. We charge what we pay, plus a small handling fee when we order for you, typically 10%. If you would rather buy parts yourself, we will send you a shopping list with the exact specifications.
Our promise is no fix, no fee: if we cannot complete the agreed repair, you do not pay for our time. That covers diagnostic labour. Parts already ordered with your approval are not refundable.
Be wary of any quote that comes with pressure, a pop-up or a cold call. A genuine repairer gives you a price before starting, and explains what is wrong in plain English. Our guide to scam pop-ups and fake Microsoft calls shows the warning signs.
Why the cheapest quote is not always cheapest
A very low headline price can hide extras: a diagnostic fee, a collection charge, or parts marked up well beyond cost. Ask what is included, whether parts are extra, and what happens if the repair cannot be done. Compare like with like, and ask for the price in writing or by message so you have it to hand. A clear answer to those questions tells you a lot about who you are dealing with.
Is it worth repairing at all?
Not always. If a machine is old, the repair is large and a replacement would not cost much more, spending the money may not make sense. Our guide on whether to repair or replace your laptop gives you a simple way to decide. We would rather tell you to replace something than sell you a repair that is poor value.
